Early Intervention Centre

Autism Spectrum Disorder is recognised as a treatable condition. With intensive Early Intervention Therapy, a child has a chance to reach their full potential and may go on to lead a normal, successful life. Early intervention is essential for a better prognosis. Upon application to the Centre, a Screening Application will need to be filled out by parents, which will be considered by a selected panel. A recommendation on the most suitable treatment will be made based on the child’s initial profile, and whether the child can be accommodated at the Centre.

Once the child has been accepted for treatment at the Centre, an integrated model of treatment is required which will include professional therapists. Assessment should be done on a group case approach, with multi-disciplinary assessments, where after an informed recommendation will be made on the most suitable treatment for the individual child. A (combined) Individual Treatment/Educational Plan per child will be developed and implemented, with regular discussion and feedback by therapists involved in the child’s treatment.

The main treatment method will be Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Therapy which is a scientifically proven therapy that guarantees progress in terms of the development of a child’s deficit skills. It is a broad spectrum therapy which is very effective on a vast range on disabilities and developmental delays. Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is the application of the principles of learning and motivation from Behaviour Analysis (the scientific study of behaviour), and the procedures and technology derived from those principles, to the solution of problems of social significance. Many decades of research have validated treatments based on ABA.

The one-on-one therapy intervention is envisaged to be given by way of tutoring in order to help overcome the developmental delays children with ASD are challenged with. Specialised aid for children who require exceptional care and teaching with regard to their learning and development is a necessity in the area. Assessment and enrolment at the schools for learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) most of the time means that whole families have to move to centres where the facilities are available.

A program is required which will enable children to progress while still being on the waiting list and, simultaneously, providing the support parents so desperately needed. Also there is a need for a personalised one-to-one approach with more immediate results, due to the fact that facilities are either not available or the pupil-teacher ratio in the classes at the specialised schools increase to the point of not catering for the special needs of the child.
